You put it back. Or worse, you buy it. And you feel a tiny pinch of regret on the way to the car. Here's what nobody tells you: That candle cost the brand about $4 to make. You paid the other $30 for the label.

THE PROBLEM

Candles aren't cheap. They're a trap. You love the glow. You love the smell. So you keep buying. Then it burns down to a puddle, and you start over. New jar. New receipt. Same pinch. And gifts? Forget it.  A decent candle for your sister cost $40. Three birthdays and a holiday later, you've spent a small fortune one something that burns away in a month. It's not that you're careless. THE STORY

I'll be honest. I used to be that person. I'd stand in the aisle for ten minutes, doing math in my head. Is it worth it? It's only a candle. But it's also the one thing that makes the house feel like mine at the end of the long day. Then a friend invited me over. She lit a candle on the table. I asked where she got it. She grinned. " I made it" I didn't belive her. It had a perfect scent. A clean, even burn. A beautiful jar. It looked like something from a shop with a franch name and a $48 price tag. She'd poured it on a Sunday afternoon. In her kitchen. With a cup of tea beside her. That night I went home and ordred my first supplies. I got the wrong wax. the wrong wicks. My first candles sank in the middle like a sad little crater. But my second one? I picked it up and held it in both hands. I made this. I smelled it. And I smiled like a kid. that feeling is hard to describe . Not "I saved money." something better: "I made something beautiful with my own hands." That's what i want you to feel.

Candle making sounds like a craft for experts. It isn't. It's for simple moves.

1. MELT. Clean wax, warmed slowly.

2. STIR. Your favorite scent, poured in.

3. POUR. Into a jar you'd be proud to show off.

4. WAIT. Let it set. Then light it.

That's the whole process. Most people finish their first candle in under an hour. The hard part isn't the pouring. It's knowing what to buy. Wrong wax cracks. Wrong wick drwons or tunnels. Wrong oil smells great in the bottle & vanishes in the jar. I made all those mistakes so you don't have to.
